You’ve resisted. You’ve tried every therapeutic option you can think of. But now, you’re ready for surgery.
It’s a big deal, having back surgery. It can be a lot less difficult, though, if you participate in your own healing. At Spine Consult NJ, we think of our patients as members of the team. Their success is our success, so partnering with them as they journey toward restored function and quality of life is part of the way we do spine care.
This post shares some key tips for faster back surgery recovery, getting you back on your feet with some recovery hacks that really move the healing process along.
Work with Your Doctor
You may not have done this before, but your doctor sure has, so listen. Work with your doctor and respect the advice you’re given about a recovery plan. You’ll never be given more than you can manage because your surgeon knows what you’re up to and what you’re not.
Post-surgical restrictions are there for a reason. Surgery is a trauma intentionally applied for the sake of healing pain. Your body needs time to heal from that, so following all the restrictions you’re given for the prescribed period is imperative.
And take the prescription to rest as a break. Load up on good books or movies and stay in bed, sleeping as much as possible. Sleep is one of nature’s most potent healers.
And as for your medications, take them as prescribed. If you need help, make sure those caring for you or your care aide know when and how they’re to be taken.
Work with your doctor for a full recovery by following her prescriptions to the letter.
Keep Your Chin Up
Many post-operative patients become discouraged or even depressed in recovery. The time it takes to heal can seem inordinately long and a lot of that time is spent doing as little as possible. Many people find it tough to relax, much less patiently recuperate.
But motivating yourself to get through it with grace and fortitude is how you get around it. Keep a daily journal to record the way you’re feeling and to record your progress. Don’t forget to look back periodically to gain encouragement from the progress you’ve made.
Indulge beloved pass times, like reading, knitting, studying a new skill or subject or just getting re-acquainted with yourself. You have time to heal.
Don’t Ignore Pain
Above all, pay close attention to the way your body is responding. If you experience a sudden increase in pain, don’t suffer in silence. Let your doctor know immediately, as pain can mean you require medical support.
Your doctor will have briefed you on what to expect after surgery and if your pain levels indicate the unexpected, reach out immediately.
We hope these tips for faster recovery from back surgery have helped. If you’re facing back surgery, don’t hesitate to reach out to the spine specialists at Spine Consult NJ. We’re committed to treating all conditions of the spine and to your full recovery.
